When every well known beauty blogger and her dog started raving about Lancômes newest lip release, the Juicy Shaker, I wanted one. Or five. Same same in my book.
In the tiny Cumbrian town I hail from, Lancôme was an accessible brand when I was growing up, along with the likes of Clinique, Clarins and Estee Lauder. But that was literally about it. I owned just about every Juicy Tube there was from around age 16 and the scent of a particular shade reminds me of snogging a guy I definitely shouldn't have been.
When my friend Sylvia asked me what I would like for my birthday I asked for one of these. They haven't launched yet here in Dubai but I have a feeling they soon will and the PR wheels will start rolling and bloggers here will also be raving about them....but my personal view is these are way over hyped.
So here's the concept-the gloss comes in a little cocktail shaker and is a bi-phase colour + nourishing oil formula. The formula separates naturally and needs to be 'shaken' vigorously to mix it. There are a huge array of shades-14 in total, each with a different 'cocktail' scent. The packaging has a screw top and a foam applicator that looks like a large foam pencil tip that is saturated with the gloss/oil hybrid when shaken up. You then dab/stroke it onto your lips for glossy colour. The colour is buildable-the more you shake, the more saturated the sponge tip becomes. As the gloss fades, a subtle stain is left behind on the lips and the colour feels comfortable, non sticky and hydrating.
Lancôme call it a lip revolution but actually YSL did this formula 12 months ago. The other lip gloss you see pictured above is the YSL Volupte Tint In Oil and there are huge similarities-the YSL is a sheer but buildable gloss containing nourishing lip oils that leaves a stain behind-you see where I am going here.
However, I personally prefer the YSL version for a few reasons. I find the application of the Lancôme Juicy Shaker to be a bit faffy with its chunky applicator compared to the slimmer and more controllable YSL applicator. With repeated usage, the YSL one is also far more hygienic. I also find the Lancôme gloss to be a bit patchy, uneven and it did start to creep into my lip lines when I continuously topped it up, giving me an unattractive lip gloss bleed. These are problems I don't have with the YSL version. I also find the YSL version stays glossier for longer and doesn't disappear as quickly.
I have the shade Berry in Love and you can see the colour does initially pack quite a punch in the first photo (after many many many layers) but it doesn't stick around long on the lips and the second photo is taken literally 10 minutes later. I do suspect though looking at the shade range that some of these shades are going to be incredibly sheer and that Berry In Love is one of the more pigmented of the shades.
Maybe the Lancôme would have faired better with me had the YSL not actually been my favourite lip gloss formula of all time....you can read my raves about it here and here.
There is a price difference-the Lancome Juicy Shaker retails at £18 in the UK and the YSL Volupte Tint in Oil is £23.50. I much prefer the packaging overall of the YSL gloss over the Lancôme as a final nail in the coffin-it's a lot more luxe and grown up (I am 36 now remember). If you're going to buy just one of this type of formula go for the YSL if you can stretch to the extra price point. The only drawback of the YSL I have found is that the shades aren't that differentiated-and the Lancôme Juicy Shaker may win back points on that front. But I have only tried one, so I can't guarantee that's the case.
One thing however I do really love about the Lancôme Juicy Shaker launch is the little YouTube promo videos on their website-you can see them here. I get it that this is supposed to be a 'fun' product and the campaign and the concept do reflect that-but the product falls short of my high expectations. I'm not saying this is a product I will never use again, I am just more likely to reach for the YSL version over this one every time.
