US Sephora wishlist

For some reason, Mike got upset when people asked us where we were going on holiday and I said Sephora!  Now I am in the States here are some of the products high up on my Sephora wishlist!

Hourglass Modernist Eye Palette in Obscura and Incandescent Light blush:

The reviews of the new Modernist palettes have been somewhat lukewarm but I just can't help wanting to try one!  Obscura is the one that is saying 'buy me'.  Incandescent Light is the newest Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blusher and the one I don't own.  It shall be mine.

Sunday Riley Luna:

My desire for this is sky high and it's been on my wishlist for months.  Not available in Dubai, I will pick this up the moment I see it.

Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM:

I had a sample of this night treatment from PTR and it was a game changer for my skin.  Definitely need a full size bottle.  This stuff is amazing on hormonal acne, especially around the jawline.

Kate Somerville RetAsphere Night Cream:

My retinol obsession continues and I want to pick this cream up in particular.  I also want to have a good look at the whole range-my wishlist for the US is quite skincare heavy.

Kat Von D Lock It Tattoo foundation:

Long lasting heavy duty foundations are right up my street.  I was recently reading all the comments on Lauras instagram post about Estee Lauder Double Wear and this foundation got a couple of mentions.  Obviously I have been out and bought Double Wear after Laura raved about it too!

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rollerball:

Who doesn't love a good rollerball?  I feel like picking up a couple, this Elizabeth and James one and I am sure I'll be spoiled for choice for the second!

Marc Jacobs Mod Noir:

Marc Jacobs newest launch is touted as being gardenia heavy and as a gardenia lover I will be sniffing this one out.

Glamglow PowerCleanser

I am a big fan of GlamGlow masks and I am tempted by their new cleanser range.  Power Cleanse is the one I am most likely to splurge on but I'll be checking out the other two in the range.

Make Up For Ever Nude Palette

I haven't seen this at the Make Up For Ever here in Dubai but this nude palette is being raved about.  I really really like Make Up For Ever single eyeshadows so to have a compact palette would make me very happy!

Disappointing Products #6

Yey, it's that time again when I get to be a moaning Minnie!  These products just are not doing anything for me.

DCL Oily Skin Solution:  This exfoliating toner was recommended to me by a dermatologist here in Dubai but it was far far too harsh for my skin.  My skin is very tolerant to acid-I used salicylic and glycolic daily, but this literally made me want to scratch my own face off it.  I had to stop using it after a week.  I know AHA's can cause the skin to tingle but burning is not my cup of tea.

NARS Sheer Matte foundation: I haven't been very impressed with the Sheer Matte formula from NARS.  I get on with the Sheer Glow and like it but I find the Sheer Matte to be much sheerer and not offer a huge amount of coverage.  The finish is also very flat.  I've been mixing it with another foundation to use it up but I wouldn't recommend or repurchase.  Also, this foundation bottle is pants without a pump, it's basically impossible to get out. And it took me months to source a pump.  Not cool.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation: I wanted to love this so so much but sadly I cannot get this to sit nicely on my skin at all.  I've tried all sorts; primer, no primer, fingers, brush and every time it just settles into pores on me.  I had the exact same problem with the Laura Mercier Silk Creme foundation and they are similar formulas.  So if you like that you'll probably like this.  But it's not for me.

Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick in Enjouee:  I love the colour of this lipstick-you can see me wearing it here.  Luckily it's pretty dupeable because the formula is really drying.  My lips were peeling by the end of the day.  This is the only formula I have an issue with from Chanel-even the Rouge Allure Velvet doesn't do this to my lips which is the 'matte' version. 

YSL Full Metal Shadow: Another disappointing new release from YSL.  I had such high hopes for these liquid eyeshadows, I thought they were going to rival the Armani Eye Tints which I really love.  They swatch beautifully but on the eyes they blend out to literally nothing, there is no pigmentation at all in the two shades I have and they apply unevenly.  They're also quite difficult to work with and are very glittery.  I didn't know you could get so much fallout from a cream eyeshadow.

Multipurpose sticks-Charlottle Tilbury v NARS

Today I am off on holiday.  Or an adventure as Mike keeps telling me.

We'll be flying into Chicago tomorrow to start driving from East to West-Route 66 but with a stop in Vegas for Mikes birthday along the way.  We're in the US for 3 weeks in total and I am really looking forward to it although getting to this point has been somewhat challenging.

Not to mention the packing!  I am pre-writing this post today (Friday) for when we go today and we haven't started packing yet.  I have NO idea how to pack for a 3 week trip where we're in a different place every night for the first 10 days.  The make up packing should be slightly easier I guess, am looking forward to digging out palettes and mini's but I still know I will overpack.  The plan is, one suitcase there each, two back!  And I wonder why Mike gets upset when people ask where we are going on holiday and I say Sephora!

Multi-purpose products can be so handy on trips and today I am comparing two I own-The cult Nars 'The Multiple' versus Charlotte Tilburys 'Beach Stick'.

Cutting to the chase-the good news is that both are really good so I've broken my thoughts down bite size pieces for easy digestion!

Design

The Multiple is packaged in a matte black chunky stick form.  I have owned many of these over the years-it was the first ever thing I bought from NARS and over time the packaging can go a little bit tacky in feel and it attracts fingerprints.  The colour stick is a wide flat circle that twists up and down.  The Beach Stick is smaller and thinner in size and packaged in a rose gold coloured mirrored tube.  The product itself is domed when you take the lid off but also twists up and down.

Winner?  The Beach stick for the uber glam packaging and compact size

Ease of use

The Beach Stick can be slapped straight on your cheeks from the tube itself-in fact I recommend it!  It blends best with your fingers, a brush seems to pick up too much of the product.  It has a velvety feel to it and no tackiness.  The pigmentation is light to medium but easily buildable.

Because The Multiple is wider and flatter it can again swiped across the cheeks or you can apply with your fingers or brush.  The pigmentation is good and you only need a small amount.  Again, no stickiness and it blends seamlessly with fingers or brush.

Winner? The Multiple for the fact it can be used with fingers or brush and is more pigmented.

Finish

The Beach Stick has a glowy, dewy finish and does seem to have some small sparkly bits that transfer to the cheek.  After I powdered though, it was difficult to see the colour underneath.  Best for use without setting powder over the top.

The Multiple has more of a satin finish and looks and feels denser or more heavy duty than the Beach Stick.  The lasting power outweighed the Beach Stick.

Winner?  The Multiple, especially as I powder my skin yet the pigment is still visible

Multipurpose-ness

I guess this comes down a bit more to the shades I have bought but the Beach Stick in Moon Beach is really only suitable for the cheeks as it's little frosty in texture for the lips and also feels a little greasy.

The Beach Stick comes in 5 shades in total and three of them look like they would make good lip colours.

The Multiple in Portofino is really good on the lips though, the texture does have a slight more heaviness to it making it quite worthy of sitting on the lips-I actually like to pat the colour straight from the stick using my fingers onto the lips.  The Multiple comes in 13 shades in the original formula plus 7 shades in the matte version

Winner?  The Multiple for being truly multipurpose and for being a better formula for the lips.

On paper The Multiple wins for being more pigmented, longer lasting and more multi use.  But I do also really like the Charlotte Tilbury and it's compact size makes it great for travelling with.

I think I'll have to pack them both!

US drugstore wish list!

As you would expect, the most organised I am about our holiday is compiling an in depth shopping list for what I want to buy in the States.

Whilst there aren't too many drugstore items on my wishlist these are the ones I will be actively seeking out.

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer:  We can buy Maybelline here but not this concealer and I have heard so many amazing things about it I want to pick up one (or two)

Opi nail polish in A butterfly moment: Opi is so cheap in the States compared to both Dubai and the UK and I had a manicure recently here in Dubai with this shade.  I'm not sure if it's still available as it was part of a Mariah Carey collection but I'll be hunting it down.

L'Oreal Infallible Pro Matte: I've heard Amelia rave about this foundation so much and I am desperate to try it even though I very rarely use drugstore foundations.  I hate the packaging but the long lasting formula sounds perfect for a hot and sweaty Dubai.

Milani baked blush: I'd love to pick up a couple of these as they are always highly spoken of.  But they're the only thing I have seen talked about regularly from Milani so other recommendations gratefully received!

Lorac Pro Palette:  Not strictly drugstore but I believe since Sephora stopped stocking Lorac in store that it is now carried in Ulta and Nordstrom.  I already own the Pro Palette 2 but I would love the slightly cooler toned Pro Palette 1 in my collection.  Because I am running out of eyeshadow.

Secret Scent Expressions Crystal Clear Gel: Random I know but my friend Lis swears by this deodorant and buys it in bulk.  She talked about it on her blog and ever since, it has been on my US wishlist.  The time is now.

My high end/Sephora wishlist is somewhat bigger-I may compile a post of the things I really really want to get.

PLEASE let me know if you have any more US drugstore recommendations for me!  At least I can pretend I am buying food and drinks and other random shizz when I am really perving over the make up section!

Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Eye Palette in The Glamour Muse

I am rather partial to the odd bit of Charlotte Tilbury make up and 'The Glamour Muse' is one of my favourite Charlotte Tilbury quads. 

The first three shades are so buttery soft and blendable and each time I use it I think how perfect this would be for a bridal look.  The shades are soft and romantic with a beautiful satin finish and I reach for this quad a lot on a daily basis.

The palette follows the usual Charlotte patented formula-from top left clockwise-the prime, enhance, smoke, pop shades.

The 'prime' shade is a silver toned white with a satin finish.  It's not chalky at all and brightens the whole lid.

The 'enhance' shade is a warm rosy gold with great pigmentation and applies and blends super smoothly.  I love this shade and despite the vast amount of eyeshadow I own this shade is pretty unique.

The 'smoke' shade is medium brown/grey-what I actually like about this palette (although I appreciate some people won't) is that the smoke shade isn't too dark.  I'm not great at doing smoky eye looks so I personally find this medium tone easier to work with for the overall look.  All of these shades last all day long on me without fading or creasing.

The 'pop' shade for me is the one that doesn't work.  The shade is a vivid violet glitter in the pan but the pigmentation on the lid is so poor and it takes so much effort to build up to become visible.  The way I have been using it is as a liner, pressed over a cream shadow using my shortest and stiffest brush and still it takes a lot of work.

I have grown to like the Charlotte Tilbury packaging-I love the rose gold accents and the sleek design of all the products.

I've found the palettes overall to be a mixed bag-I have purchased 8 of the 9 palettes in Charlottes range and my favourite is the Dolce Vita.  I have reviews on The Sophisticate, The Uptown Girl, The Dolce Vita, The Fallen Angel and The Golden Goddess on my blog if you're looking for inspiration!

Marc Jacobs Shameless Bold Blush in Reckless

Over the past couple of weeks I have been trying some of my newly purchased Marc Jacobs beauty products-you can see them all in the image above but today I am going to focus on the Shameless Bold Blush in the shade Reckless and there will be reviews of the eyeshadow palette and lipstick to follow.

The packaging is an immediate plus point.  I love the way these blushers are packaged-the outer casing is a sleek black perspex with a button opening and then the blush sits inside with a faille imprint.  Hands up if you know what faille means?  I didn't but it means: a somewhat shiny closely woven silk, rayon, or cotton fabric characterized by slight ribs in the weft.

Basically the blush has a ribbed texture-a bit like corduroy to be honest! 

Reckless is a dusky pink colour that has a silvery undertone-it reminds me of a more pigmented MAC Well Dressed which is a blush I love and like Well Dressed, Reckless is hard to overdo. 

The formula really is lovely-it's very lightweight, silky and finely milled and blends seamlessly.  Reckless has a satin finish and the slight silver undertone stops it from being in any way flat on the skin.  The only problem for me comes in the lasting power-by lunchtime it has pretty much disappeared from my skin.  Sure, it's sleek enough it pop into any make up bag but I'm not one for topping up my blush on the go to be honest.  Once it's on, I need it to stay on.

My final thoughts are:

'Bold blush' seems out of context for this shade/formula
It's aesthetically pleasing inside and out
It's a beautiful, wearable colour
The texture is gorgeous to apply
This shade doesn't last the distance
It probably won't stop me buying more!

Sarah Chapman Skinesis Rapid Radiance Cleanse

I've been using the Sarah Chapman Skinesis Rapid Radiance Cleanse now for over a month now so I thought I would share my thoughts.  There are currently two Sarah Chapman products in my skincare routine-this cleanser in my morning routine and the Overnight Facial in my evening routine.

I've been using the cleanser as my morning cleanse in the shower-I apply to dry skin, massage in and then rinse clean.  It has a clay base but feels very light on the skin when massaged in and seems to 'absorb' into the skin as you massage.  It rinses clean without a flannel leaving no residue.

If you have read my hormonal acne post from a few weeks back you'll know I have actively been researching products containing salicylic acid and retinol to improve my skin and my skin has improved dramatically.  I also know my skin responds well to Vitamin C and struggles to tolerate 'butters' (shea, cocoa etc)

This formula contains Vitamin C, lactic and salicylic acid to help to unclog and detoxify pores and contains neroli, bergamot, geranium and petitgrain essential oils to add radiance to the skin.   I feel like my skin has been consistently more well behaved whilst I have been using this cleanser along with all the other skincare I am currently using plus the fish oil I am taking.  It is also recommended to use this cleanser as a 2 minute brightening mask which I do probably twice a week.

The one downside seems to be that I feel like I have to use a lot each morning-I use about 8 pumps each day as the dispenser only dispenses a tiny amount.  But unless I use this much I don't feel I have enough product to thoroughly cleanse my face.  This is definitely a morning cleanser-it isn't heavy duty enough to remove make up and it's ingredients are designed to treat the skin rather than clean the skin.

I would repurchase this cleanser though-my skin seems to be benefiting from the gentle clay base and the cocktail of acids and vitamins.  The fuss free application in the morning is a plus too given that I normally stumble into the shower half asleep every morning!

I purchased mine from Space NK where it retails for £29.

Colour Pop-Part 2-Kathleen Lights quad and more!

My first Colour Pop eyeshadow post went down so well and I had lots of requests for more swatches so here is a quick post showing the rest of the shadows I purchased online from Colour Pop.  Sadly, they still don't ship to the UK or Dubai so you need to find an American friend/relative or sign up for a mail forwarding service (what I do).

Above you can see the 'Where the light is' foursome, created by Kathleen Lights-the perfect quad for a bronzy golden smokey eye.  Everyone seems to be raving over the 'kathleenlights' shade but don't underestimate the beauty of Blaze either.  There are two matte and two glitter shades but again, the same quality and consistency are evident across all four shades.  I love.

Partridge and I ♥ This are clear favourites for me.  I love the texture and finish of all these shadows and the lasting power is exceptional.  Still the best $5 eyeshadow you can buy in my opinion and I am quite obsessed!

Make Up For Ever Step 1 Mattifying Primer

If there was ever a product I was on the fence about it is this new primer from Make Up For Ever.

Now that Make Up For Ever is stocked in Debenhams in the UK I feel like I can talk more about the bits I have from there-and they do some really good stuff.  Up until a couple of weeks ago, it wasn't that accessible in the UK whereas it's easy to buy here in Dubai-Sephora stocks it and there is a standalone store in Dubai Mall.

The Step 1 primer range comes in 10 different formulas.  The first 5 are to improve texture-there is the mattifying primer to reduce shine, the smoothing primer to even the skin's texture, the hydrating primer restores add a boost of hydration to dry skin, the nourishing primer to moisturize and comfort and the redness correcting primer to neutralise red tones.  Then there are 5 primers to improve tone and add radiance in blue, pink, yellow, peach and caramel-each one designed for a different skintone.

By default I usually go for mattifying primers-my skin is on the oily side and I often need to blot away shine during the day so that's the one I bought from Sephora.

The Mattifying Primer is a gel like texture and when you apply it to the skin you instantly feel it welding to the skin and it does mattify.  It also dries instantly.  In fact every time I use it I think 'this stuff is hardcore, it's going to be amazing'.  A little goes a long way and you do need to use it quite sparingly.  It doesn't have that silicone 'velvet' feeling you get from something like Smashbox photofinish primer.

I am finding though that when I apply my foundation on top with a brush it doesn't sit so nicely on top of this primer.  If I use my fingers (which I am not a fan of because it's so messy) it seems to be fine.

The majority of my foundation still seems to be on my face at the end of the day but it's definitely not keeping me matte all day long.  I need to blot shine throughout the day.  I also find that as the weather is getting hotter here in Dubai, by the end of the day the foundation around the bottom of my nose tends to have gone a little patchy whenever I use this primer.

For the super oily, I would say steer clear.  For combination and normal skinned girls I can see why this would get a thumbs up for those wanting a matte finish.  For me, I need to go more hardcore.  I am going to persevere with it a little longer to see if I can make it work but at the moment, it's not a must have nor a repurchase for me.

Chanel Tisse Gabrielle Les 4 ombres eyeshadow quad

Today's eyeshadow review was enabled by Sunny from Mostly Sunny whose blog is bookmarked on my favourites and who provides a constant source of high end make up enablement!

Last year, both Dior and Chanel reformulated their eyeshadow quads/quints-Dior for the worse I feel but Chanel for the better.  The new Chanel quads feel smoother and more pigmented than the old formula, which to me felt sometimes chalky and insipid.

I feel that I already own too many 'smoky eye' quads especially as a) I don't naturally gravitate towards greys on my eyes and b) I can't do a sexy smoky eye to save my life.

Tisse Gabrielle has four complimentary shades in the pan although on my skintone, the two grey shades don't show much differentiation which is the main downside for me in this quad.  That doesn't mean however that I don't like it overall.  The formula is lovely-it's smooth, easy to blend and offers no fallout.  Each shade has that beautiful complex microshimmer that appears in direct sunlight.

The purple shade is my favourite but this is one quad that I prefer to use without an eyeshadow primer which is almost unheard of for me.  Without a primer the purple tone almost has a wet look silvery tone to it that is really pretty.  With a primer the shade deepens dramatically and on me, it's too full on for daytime.  The pearly white makes a lovely inner corner highlight and the two darker tones compliment the purple well-but I wish there was more of a mid tone grey in the palette to get some shade differentiation in there.

My main issue is that I don't reach for it often enough!  The formula though gets a big tick in my book.

Dior Rouge Dior Brillant lip gloss-Miss, Swan and Hollywood

The Rouge Dior Brillant glosses are the latest addition to the Dior gloss range and to my gloss collection!  I have read many favourable reviews so far so I purchased three from Sephora here in Dubai and have found them to be fairly comparable to the NARS glosses I reviewed recently.  Which is a good thing!

The packaging is very elegant-the plastic tube shows the gloss colour inside and the navy lid and silver engraved trim is in keeping with the entire Rouge Dior family.  I love the Dior Rouge Dior lipsticks and have amassed a fair few now. 

The gloss itself feels very similar to the NARS lip gloss formula-it's completely non sticky, very glossy and light on the lips.  But where the NARS ones feel like water on the lips, the Dior ones feel definitely more balm like.  The formula contains three nourishing oils and also Vitamin E so is very hydrating.  Again, like the NARS shades, they are glossy rather than 'in your face' pigmented so these are brilliant for casual days.

The applicator is a little unusual, it's longer than the average with a 'well' to hold the gloss in and dispense 'the perfect dose'.  However I find myself needing to 'double dip' so to speak to get the right amount of gloss.  However the applicator is very precise and applies the product smoothly without pooling.

What I do like is that there is a corresponding lipstick to each shade in the Rouge Dior range so if you do want to amp up the pigmentation you can always go for the lipstick instead.

'Miss' And 'Dior' look almost identical in my lip swatches and I would say you definitely don't need both.  Miss does look slightly pinker in real life and is my favourite of the three.  I did try to retake the photos to see if I could pick up the pink in Miss but again they both looked the same.  Hollywood is a bolder, fuchsia pink with a great shine.

Sara has swatches of all twelve shades in the range on her blog and Isabelle is definitely encouraging me to pick up the four shades she has!

I am a big fan of the Rouge Dior range and the  Rouge Dior Brilliant is definitely a welcome addition to the family!

May empties

June is here which means holiday month yey!!  Not until the end of the month but it's coming around fast!

Here are my empties from May.  The standouts were:

Sephora express make up remover wipes: I really like these individually wrapped Sephora make up wipes.  Don't get me wrong I would never cleanse my face with make up wipes but these are super handy for throwing in my make up bag to clear up any smudges or smears throughout the day or for removing swatches from my hands.  They're only $9 as well.

La Roche Posay-Toleraine: This ultra gentle cleansing milk definitely helped my skin back to health when it was freaking out-I have done a few review of it here in my adult acne post.  Again, this is another budget friendly purchase.

Acqua Di Parma-Fico Di Amalfi:  I love this fragrance-it's so fresh and not overly girly.  I love it in autumn but I finished it off in Spring.  This perfume gets me compliments.  The notes are bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, and citron at the top. Fig nectar, pink pepper, and jasmine petals are blended at the heart and base notes of fig wood, cedar wood, and benzoin follow.  I would definitely repurchase if I didn't currently own 324,943 bottles of perfume.

Elemis Pro Collagen Eye Renewal: At last, an eye cream I have loved!  I bought this in a salon here in Dubai after the facialist used it on me.  It's a very hydrating yet light serum, it absorbs quickly and smoothes fine lines.  The only bad thing I would say is that the pump dispenses too much product-one pump was too much for even both eyes.  Apart from that it was the perfect morning serum.

Bite sized thoughts on some of the other bits:

Bioderma-I only use this to remove my eye make up but I found this jumbo sized bottle a bit cumbersome to use with the pump top. 

Pixi Glow Tonic-really like this-read my thoughts here.

DiorSkin Nude BB creme-I have mixed thoughts.  The coverage is good for a BB creme but it is very pink toned and I need to blend it really well into my skin.  I use something like this mainly on weekends and holidays.

Label.m/L'Oreal-items I continuously hoard these in my bathroom.  I stockpile when I go back to the UK!

MAC 'Bombshell' was a rediscovery for me this week and immediately went into my handbag make up bag!  I just love it.  Also really like the new Burberry Kisses formula-and Military Red is a great 'red' red.
